Sarah C Barnes

Hi there, I am Sarah Barnes and I am a multidisciplinary designer and illustrator based in Southern California. Art has always been what lights up my soul.  I have been a teacher since 2005, mainly in elementary but a few years teaching electives to middle school students. Even though both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree are in education, art classes were my favorite past time. I have continued to grow my art talents through college course, online courses, and taking as many workshops as I possibly can. I often would tell my middle school students that  art is a skill not a talent, and it is so rewarding to truly live out that mantra on a daily basis.

My favorite art form is digital! I LOVE drawing digitally. Adobe has been apart of my life since early in my college career. I started using Photoshop  in college when my dad graciously bought it for me to try out. I did as many projects as I could using the program to learn as much as I could! When I got my first teaching job I learned flash and Dreamweaver and created the first classroom website at my school. When my first daughter was born I threw myself into learning about digital scrapbooking and learning how to make repeat patterns and elements in Illustrator. I designed many teacher websites for my friends. I also became super interested in digital planners which had me learning how to make interactive PDFs and incorporating them with the goodnotes app. When I needed worksheets for my classroom, I learned how to use InDesign. I am constantly trying to improve my skills with these programs as well as searching out and finding new ones to explore as well! I’m am also versed in WordPress, basic HTML and CSS, Figma, Affinity Designer, and some more that I can’t remember but would probably say yes if you ask!

I love things that make me smile and that bring a little sunshine to the world, hence my instagram handle is @itsmyownsunshine. I love my instagram community! I started the account just as a place to put my artwork and it took off, within months I grew followers who were incredible. I love sharing my work with others as well as making connections to people from around the world. Make sure you come and join me on Instagram!

My world is surrounded by creativity. I have 4 beautiful daughters who are just the most amazing humans ever! I love sharing the creative process with each of them from basic crayon skills with my 1 year old to comic book creations with my 10 year old. Besides my children and my husband, I have a few loves in my life . . . . reading, sitting on the beach, stationary and art supplies, and tv shows that involve magic and fantasy.

The goal for my art is to make myself smile. If I can do that I consider myself a success.
